It’s the beginning of the new year meaning time to set some New Year’s Resolutions. If this time your ‘eat healthier’ goal is ‘really’ one that you want to achieve, then it’s time to look at your diet in detail and work out which aspects you are missing.
Each time we eat food we are either nourishing or punishing our bodies. All foods are made up of macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats and proteins) with different foods being higher in different macros. Most people tend to be deficient in protein, eating a higher carbohydrate or fat diet. However, protein is essential for helping to build lean muscle mass and allowing the body to recover after exercise and needs to be an adequate part of your diet.
The next important details to look at are the ‘micronutrients’ in the foods you are eating. Micronutrients or ‘micros’ to those in the know are vitamins and minerals that we get through the foods we eat. Each food has a different amount of micronutrients within it and the more you get in the food the better the food is. Foods really high in micronutrients are known as ‘Superfoods’. Superfoods will boost your nutrient intake largely whilst leaving you feeling healthier internally and externally.
So, where can you find superfoods and what do they actually do?
Well, all of the flavours in our musclemary plant protein have a blend of carefully selected superfood mixtures which mix together to create optimum health and taste. Here are some of the superfoods you can find in musclemary.
Maca is a root originally part of the radish family, grown in the Peruvian mountains. Macro is full of vitamins B, C and E and is best known for its ability to balance hormones and it’s high protein content and energy boosting properties.
The Baobab fruit originates from Africa and contains a high level of vitamin C. Baobab was used in traditional African medicine for decades before being discovered here. Similarly, to the maca root it also has great energy boosting properties and is rich in fibre, calcium, vitamin B6 and potassium as well as being good for heart health.
Acai berries are featured in each of our blends due to the fact they taste incredible and secondly their amazingly high antioxidant content which is a lot higher than any other berry which is why they are also considered a superfood.
Hemp is another superfood not to miss out on, it has a rich, nutty texture and taste that is filled with iron, magnesium and B vitamins. It is also a great choice for boosting energy and supporting healthy bones and muscles. Hemp is one of the rare plant protein sources that contains all of the essential amino acids that our bodies can’t produce by themselves - making it a fantastic protein choice for vegans and vegetarians.
